Focus : STANDING FIRM IN THE KINGDOM WAY

Topic : THE RIGHTEOUS

Text : Matthew 5:6, Rom 6:11-14, 3:21-22, Eph 4:24-32, Psalm 42:1-2

Introduction :

Until the coming of Christ, man had thought that he must work very hard to be righteous. The disciples must have been surprised when Jesus said they needed to thirst and hunger after righteousness for them to be righteous. This is a complete departure from the way they were brought up under the law. It should also be noted that at this point, Jesus had not yet gone to the cross but they were already prepared for the righteousness which is by faith. It is very encouraging to know that those who truly desire to live right and walk in righteousness will receive the righteousness of Christ and grace to practically walk in His righteousness.

The righteousness that is by faith is not simply a covering giving to believers but a life that practically shows in the daily living of the believer. The phrase ‘they shall be filled’ means that the person will live right and practically live out the righteousness of Christ that is implanted in his spirit. Therefore, no child of God has excuse not to live right. Also, no one should say that it is difficult to be righteous or that no one can be righteous. It is the Lord who fills with righteousness, so there is no excuse to live in unrighteousness.

Lesson Aim :

To learn to hunger and thirst after righteousness.

Discussion Questions :

  1. What does it mean to hunger and thirst after righteousness? (Romans 3:21-22, Psalm 139:23-24, Phil. 3:9).
  2. How is the believer filled with the righteousness of Christ? (Titus 2:11-12, Ephesians 4:24-32, Romans 6:11-14).
  3. Does your life reflect the righteousness of Christ?

Memory Scripture :

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6)
